South Beach Wine and Food Festival

While many of us in the United States like to lovingly take credit for being the first to discover EVERYTHING, we might have to acquiesce and admit that our friends “across the pond” may have cornered the market on a few things before they became our cause celebre.
As the story goes, the modern-age of British food festivals began in Ludlow.

Food expert and self-proclaimed foodie Brian Viner of the Telegraph explains that, the local chamber of commerce, aghast at plans for a big out-of-town supermarket, cooked up a scheme to show people what they’d be missing if Ludlow’s independent butchers and bakers went to the wall. The town’s inaugural food festival was a modest affair, held in the sixth-form college, but the following year it moved into the grounds of the handsome, ruined castle and started the inexorable growth that in truth, these days, can make it something of a challenge to get around.
With a deep love and respect for my pals living “across the pond”, I still must remain true to my roots and as such, I encourage all my UK mates to take a trip to the shores of Miami, specifically South Beach and experience a food festival that takes eating to an entirely new level. Clearly, behind any successful Food Festival is the food, but it takes more than a “plate of this” or “glass of that” to make it work. Innovation, creativity, and a willingness to take a bit of a gamble on new ideas are the true keys to success. Lee Schrager, founder of one of the most innovative and often described as provocative festivals just pulled up stakes from this year’s New York City Wine and Food Festival (NYCWFF) to take it on the road once again to the beaches of Miami for the South Beach Wine And Food Festival (SOBEWFF)
While many know Lee, I feel lucky enough to call him a friend. As a man with a staunch sense of integrity, he is equally creative and compassionate. He is also one of the most gracious of hosts, be it a party for one or one thousand. Therefore, with each opportunity I have to sit down and “dish” (pun intended), I always leave there inspired and equally full!

Joshua Estrin: What’s new this year at SOBEWFF?
Lee Schrager: One of our newest events that is set to kick off the Festival is “Ronzoni Pasta’s 100th Anniversary: Al Fresco Feast” sponsored by MIAMI magazine hosted by Debi Mazar and Gabriele Corcos. It is always exciting to infuse new ideas into the festival which is why we are taking the signature meat-centric “Q” event to the next level with “Meatopia: The Q Revolution,” and also including live music from the Blues Travelers.
JE: What Makes the SOBEWFF an international destination for so many foodies?
LS: The weather, the weather, the weather! While most of the country and many parts of the world are under a deep freeze, we offer beautiful beaches, sunny skies and inspired food and libations that are well worth a trip across the street or across the globe.
History has a wonderful way of writing and rewriting itself and in an age where many apologize for indulgence, this iconic festival has aire of pageantry as well. This foodie Shangri-La is spun by the creative genius of Lee Schrager and his team and is simply the way we like to do things this side of “puddle”. As for those lucky enough to call the UK home… You can lay claim to the late Princess Diana and the equally delicious Duchess Kate. Although I must admit, I secretly believe both are imports from the states. Yes, the only thing better than the SOBEWFF and Lee Schrager is an equally scrumptious conspiracy theory.
