We got a chance to listen to Laura Jae’s new EP ‘Silver Lined Hearts’ which is out on the 14th of July, her sound is described as electro-cinematic. Having recently revealed new single, ‘Out Getting Ribs’, to instant acclaim, Laura now returns with an EP that sits somewhere between the darkly atmospheric tones of James Blake and The xx, the experimental sentiments of Bjork and the gritty melodies of King Krule.
Born in Greenwich and raised within the walls of London, Laura grew up on a diverse musical diet that included her mother’s collection of country music, from Norah Jones to The Carpenters. Meanwhile, her musician father filled the family home with the songs of Sade, Michael Jackson, Whitney Houston and Toni Braxton, influencing the soulful tones of her sound today.
Let Go
The first song in the EP sets the tone for the whole series, and we can say it really does have that cinematic sound. It echo’s through the speakers like a ghost, something a lot of Artists and Designers would use. This beautifully ethereal song shows off Laura’s cinematic sound, with tender lyrics and dulcet vocals.
Nostalgic
Second track, starts off like you’re listening to a chill out CD. Her vocals come creeping in, in the most beautiful way, you can really hear her pain in this track. This song is a swelling symphony of harmonies and slow-burning percussive tones, it’s one of those songs you put on when you want to think back on your life.
Numb
This track reinforces the young singer’s ability to craft gorgeous melodies infused with a touching poetic lyricism. Whilst giving its audience a feel of how powerful her vocal ability is, without over doing it. This song has the most electro influence throughout most of the choruses, whilst the verses you can hear the heartbeat of the drums.
Running Wild
The sultry ‘Running Wild’ weaves vocal echoes and infectious electronic arrangements over a resonating bass, whilst the harmonies in the song keep it cinematic. This song is her most upbeat in terms of pace, it really does have this sense of like she’s actually running from something.
Out Getting Ribs
‘Out Getting Ribs’ is a mesmerising King Krule cover with a measure of haunting melancholy. If this is what Laura does with her covers, then she is a genius. Taking songs and then remaking them to sound more her style, its beautiful to hear. The tone of the whole song is like you’re listening to a track backwards, very interesting take on a cover, especially listening to her voice being made to sound more demonic, very spooky.
Love Triangle
The bonus track on the EP, shows off Laura’s falsetto ability. This track is probably one of favourite, you can hear a lot of artists influence in the way its produced. The pace and tone of the song goes up and down, bring you in and out of how the singer is feeling, it’s a thing to experience indeed.
